Born in Denver, Bethell moved to Redlands, California with his family in 1905.
Following service in WWI, Bethell studied at the Newman Art Institute in New Jersey and later found work in Hollywood as a designer of theatrical sets for movies.
He is best known for his western subjects/desert scenes including landscapes of Colorado and California.
