Eric Waters Gibberd was born in London, England in 1897. He was a student of Oscar Van Young, Ejnar Hansen, and studied in Spain before immigrating to the United States. In New Mexico he worked with good friend Emil Bisttram.
Gibberd exhibited widely with stops in Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and Denver.
