Xavier Barile was born in Tufo, Italy, and at the age of 16, his family immigrated to Queens, New York. Barile quickly learned English, allowing him to enroll in art classes at Cooper Union. After graduating from there, he began courses at the Art Students League, where he worked under John Sloan, Louis Mora, William de Leftwich Dodge, Victor Perard, Robert Henri, and George Luks. These artists inspired him to open his own school, and in 1919, Barile founded The Barile Art School in New York City.
In 1939, Barile relocated to Pueblo, Colorado, where he was the founding head of the Pueblo Junior College Art Department. There, he established the Pueblo Junior College Fine Arts Festival and brought in several art exhibits from around the country.
