A painter and printmaker, Anna Elizabeth Keener (1895-1982) was born in Colorado and raised in Texas. In 1913, she moved to Lindsborg, Kansas to study art, music, and education at Bethany College, where she met the famed Swedish-American artist Birger Sandzen. Sandzen became Keener's mentor and was one of her greatest influences until his death in 1954. Over the years, Keener developed a regionalist style with impressionist influence, apparent in this oil painting on masonite titled Rockies and Water. Various shades of brown, red, and yellow show rocks and serene water, distinguished simply by shadows and broad brushstrokes. Presented in a custom mahogany and 22K gold leaf hand-carved frame, outer dimensions measure 24 ½ x 30 ½ x 2 inches. Image size is 18 x 24 inches.
