A native of California, Albert Pennoyer abandoned his studies at UC Berkeley to study architecture at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Painting soon became his passion and he then studied at Academies Julian and Grand Chaumière. He returned to the United States at the beginning of WWI.
Pennoyer established residency in Connecticut around 1919, however, he continued to paint California landscapes and kept a studio in Lake Tahoe.
He published books includinng, "Locomotives in Our Lives: Railroad Experiences of Three Brothers for More Than Sixty Years, 1890-1951." New York: Hastings House, 1954
