A native of Ohio, Charles Stewart studied at the Toledo Museum for eight years and later at the Art Student's League in New York. He continued his studies in Mexico and New Mexico where he studied under Louis Ribak at the Taos Valley Art School.
He lived in Taos between 1947 and 1985. During this time, he taught sculpture and art at the Taos Art Association as well as at the Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
