A native of New Jersey, Schoonover he began studies at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia in 1896.
He became a successful illustrator specializing in trappers and American Indians. His work was widely printed in publications including Scribner's, Ladies' Home Journal, Harper's, Collier's and McClure's.
