Naumer grew up in the Black Forest of Germany. In 1925, the 17 year old emigrated to the United States, landing in New York. As a boy, he became enchanted with the American West in writings by authors including Carl May and he soon headed westward stopping for a time in New Mexico before settling in California. He studied at the Frank Wiggins Art School before joining the merchant marines. Following 6 years at sea, Naumer returned to New Mexico where he settled permanently.
