Goehring received his initial art training in Detroit at the Meinzinger School of Applied Art. After serving in WWII, he married and permanently relocated to Colorado Springs. Following a short stint as an instructor at the University of Denver, Goehring enrolled in the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center where he studied with Jean Charlot and Emerson Woelffer. It was during his time at the CSFAC that he embraced abstract expressionism, abandoning traditional painting altogether.
