Martha Ann Walter began her formal education at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art under William Merritt Chase. In 1903, she traveled to Paris to study at the Academie Julian and also at the Academie Grande Chaumiere, Paris. In 1908, she was the recipient of the Cresson Traveling Scholarship.
After Walter completed her education, she established a studio in New York City, and later in Gloucester, Massachusetts following World War I.
Walter was an accomplished plein-air painter known for her vivid impressionist seascapes of resorts in Gloucester, Coney Island, Atlantic City and along the French Coast. She achieved an international reputation, traveling and painting in France, England, Italy, Holland, Germany, Spain, and North Africa.
