Mary Lawrence was born on the Island of Mull, Scotland in 1899. Mary's father was a minister and she was one of eleven children. In 1908 she immigrated to Canada. From an early age she was interested in art but did not begin pursing it until the late 1930's. She enrolled in art classes taught by Henry George Glyde, the president of the Alberta Society of Artists (ASA) from 1936-1947. Mary excelled and was awarded multiple scholarships to the Banff School of Fine Arts at the University of Alberta and by 1955 earned an Intermediate Certificate of Art. Mary then moved to Red Deer Alberta where she began teaching art classes in addition to creating her own paintings. Mary's paintings were exhibited in galleries in Red Deer and surrounding towns. In 1966 she submitted an oil painting "Rocks and Pines" in the ASA's winter exhibition and it was selected for publishing in a Canadian Centennial Year Calendar. Mary was a prolific artist creating landscapes, abstract and still life paintings. She died in 1990 in Oakville Ontario.
