Born in Las Animas, Colorado, Richard Ayers studied art at Miami University of Ohio and Northwestern University. He moved to Colorado in the 1940s and studied with Vance Kirkland and William Sanderson at the University of Denver.

Ayers established a commercial art and public relations agency.
