Orphaned at an early age, Robert Lindneux was tutored privately in New York by his aunt. At the age of sixteen, Lindneux traveled to Europe for further art instruction. While abroad, Lindneux studied at the National Academy in Düsseldorf, Germany, under Vautier; with Mokacsy at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris; and with Franz Stuck at the Academy in Munich.
Lindneux met Buffalo Bill Cody in Paris in 1892. Within a short period of time, he also met and befriended Rosa Bonheur. He was inspired to travel west after meeting them, and returned to the United States in 1893.
In 1894, Lindneux settled in Denver, and remained there until 1897. From there, he ventured on to Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota. The Oglala Sioux tribe made Lindeux and honorary chief while he stayed with them. He also resided briefly with the Crow and the Cheyenne in Montana.
In 1909, Lindneux opened a studio in Denver where he settled permanently. There, he painted many pictures of his friend Buffalo Bill. One of his best known paintings, Buffalo Bill on Horseback, is housed in the museum at Bill's gravesite on top of Lookout Mountain in Colorado.
Lindneux remained in Denver until his death in 1970.
