Born in Calcutta, India, in 1920 to American parents, Sara Uffelman (Sara Louise Lindemuth, Sara L. Uffelman) moved to the United States in 1922. She grew up in Philadelphia and Ohio. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1942 from the Carnegie Institute. In 1943, Sara enlisted in the Womens Army Corps. At the time she was living in Ohio with her husband, Karl Uffelman. Following service in WWII, the couple moved to Boulder, Colorado where they both attended the University of Colorado (CU). She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1950. After instructing at CU, she and her husband relocated to Pueblo, Colorado, where she taught at Pueblo College.
