Born in Elberfeld, Germany, Ernest Fiene was an illustrator, muralist, printmaker, and painter. Fiene came to the United States in 1912. He studied at the National Academy of Design from 1914-1918, and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design from 1916-1918. He also studied at the Art Students League and in Paris at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere.
Fiene became a naturalized citizen in 1927. He taught at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in the summer of 1935. From 1938-1964, he taught at the Art Students League. He was a member of the supervising faculty of the Famous Artists School in Westbury, Connecticut.
