Margaret Goddard Carlson was born in New Jersey in 1882 and developed an affinity for art at an early age. She attended the Art Students League in New York from 1898 to 1899 and began her career designing textiles and illustrating children's books.
Carlson became a member of the artist's colony in Woodstock. In 1913 she married John Fabian Carlson. Together the two took many painting trips to Colorado Springs, Colorado wonderfully capturing the picturesque landscape of the Rocky Mountains,
