Twilight of History is an original oil on board painting by Frederick Shane (1906-1992) from 1947. Shane specialized in genre scenes, landscapes, seascapes, and portraits, executed in a variety of media. Fundamentally a realist, his work also contains some elements of abstraction, expressionism, and surrealism, which truly coalesce in this painting. Shane's reflection of the twilight of our existence is shown with three creatures in the foreground lighting a rocket, with city ruins in the background.
