About Us
Founded in 1979, David Cook Galleries has spent more than four decades celebrating the art, history, and creative legacy of the American West. Located in Denver’s historic Lower Downtown (LoDo) neighborhood, we specialize in 19th–20th century regional American fine art and museum-quality historic Native American art, with a particular emphasis on Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region.
Our foundation is rooted in David Cook’s lifelong passion for art, shaped through extensive travel and study, and ultimately grounded in Colorado, an ideal place to explore the deep connections between landscape, culture, and artistic expression. Guided early on by influential mentors at the Denver Art Museum and the University of Colorado Museum, we developed a deep commitment to the historic arts of Indigenous peoples of North America at a time when few institutions recognized these works as fine art rather than ethnographic material. This perspective continues to inform our mission to elevate Indigenous artistry and preserve its cultural and aesthetic significance.
In 1989, we established a permanent gallery space in the historic Chevron Building on Wazee Street, an architectural landmark built in 1902 as an annex to the Oxford Hotel. There, David and his wife and business partner, Linda Cook, expanded the gallery’s vision to include historic Colorado and Rocky Mountain artists, many of whom were underrecognized at the time. Together, we have played a meaningful role in bringing these regional artists to broaden local and national attention.
Our fine art collection spans the late 19th through mid-20th centuries, featuring painters and printmakers who documented the evolving West, from early “historian” artists capturing untouched landscapes and Indigenous life to modernists and abstractionists inspired by Colorado’s light, terrain, and energy. Alongside this work, we present historic Native American art and Indigenous material culture from across North America, including Plains beadwork, Southwest textiles and pottery, Northwest Coast basketry and totem poles, and other exceptional works.
We work closely with Private Collectors, Museums, Interior Designers, Corporations, and first-time buyers. Education is central to our mission: many visitors encounter this material for the first time in our gallery, and we see it as our responsibility to inform, inspire, and foster meaningful connections between people and objects.
In an increasingly fast-paced world, we believe art matters more than ever. We view the gallery as a place of reflection, a sanctuary where history, craftsmanship, and beauty come together. Whether helping to build a major collection or placing a single piece that brings daily joy, we are honored to steward this work and share it with those who value it.
