About the Artist

Virginia Maitland was born in 1947. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she was trained in the style of Thomas Eakins and Mary Cassatt. However, she was influenced by color field painting, pop art and abstract expressionism of the 1960s art school and her work moved toward abstraction. In 1970, Virginia Maitland settled in Boulder, Colorado where she was "...captivated by the light, sky and color of Colorado."

Maitland's work is influenced by churches, graveyards and the natural landscape. " I have been able to combine formal and expressive interests, which play out in purely abstract paintings, with the emotional sense of place that photographs bring to the total image. Currently, I find that both styles nurture each other." - Virginia Maitland
