Acoma Polychrome Dough Bowl with Floral Motifs, circa 1920-1940
Acoma Polychrome Dough Bowl with Floral Motifs, circa 1920-1940
Antique Acoma Pueblo polychrome dough bowl, dating to approximately 1920-1940. Hand formed from earthenware and finished with a slipped surface, the bowl is decorated with a broad exterior band of stylized floral and foliate motifs in red-brown and dark brown on a cream ground.
The rounded interior and lower exterior are finished in a warm red slip, while fine dark lines frame the painted decorative band near the rim and base. The repeated blossoms, curving stems, and elongated leaves create a graceful continuous design around the vessel.
With its generous proportions and strong graphic decoration, this bowl is a handsome example of early 20th-century Acoma pottery combining traditional vessel form with naturalistic painted ornament.
