Pueblo Polychrome Olla, circa 1890-1910
Pueblo Polychrome Olla, circa 1890-1910
Historic Acoma Pueblo polychrome olla, circa 1890-1910. The hand-coiled earthenware pottery vessel has a rounded body, high shoulder, and short, slightly flaring neck. Its cream-slipped surface is painted in black and warm orange with an energetic composition of interlocking geometric and curvilinear elements. Finely hatched passages, bold triangular forms, and sweeping motifs repeat around the vessel, framed by a dark band at the rim and a narrow linear border above the polished red underbody. The olla is an expressive example of late 19th to early 20th century Acoma pottery, distinguished by its strong form, intricate linework, and visually dynamic design.
