Pair of Jicarilla Apache Beaded Hide Leggings, Late Classic period, circa 1875
Pair of Jicarilla Apache Beaded Hide Leggings, Late Classic period, circa 1875
Pair of antique 19th-century Late Classic Period Jicarilla Apache leggings, circa 1875. Constructed from native-tanned hide, the leggings are rubbed with yellow ochre pigment, giving the leather its rich golden surface. Each leg is ornamented with partially beaded panels and extensively fringed along the outer edge.
The beadwork is executed in glass trade beads, with elongated white-ground panels incorporating repeated geometric tipi forms in dark blue and green. Additional narrow beaded bands in blue, white, green accent the edges and lower portions of the leggings. Small brass-colored metal tacks/ornaments are applied alongside the primary beaded panels.
Long hide fringe follows the sides, creating a dramatic silhouette characteristic of Plains and Apache dress traditions of the late 19th century. The combination of ochre-colored hide, restrained geometric beadwork, and extensive fringe makes this an especially striking pair of historic Jicarilla Apache leggings.
