Pair of Crow, Northern Plains Beaded Leather Cuffs with Bar Design, circa 1875-1900
Pair of antique Northern Plains Indian wrist cuffs, also known as gauntlet cuffs, are crafted from hide and adorned with Venetian trade beads arranged in a classic bar design, characteristic of Crow beadwork. Dating from the late 19th century, the beads feature traditional colors of pony trader blue, yellow, red, and green, reflecting the vibrant palette of Crow artistry. Each cuff is fully beaded, cotton lined, finished with cloth edging, and accented by tin cone tinklers, adding a distinctive touch not to mention a wonderful sound when worn. The beads are thread sewn.
The Crow, or Apsáalooke, originally resided in the Great Plains region of North America, including present-day Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. Their beadwork, known for its intricate designs and vibrant colors, is beautifully represented in these cuffs.
