Artist Biography - Jane Dow Bromberg
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Jane Dow Bromberg (Jane Dow) studied at the Detroit School of Arts and the Detroit Institute of Arts and Crafts. In 1940, while attending the Art Students League in New York City, she was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado (later the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center).
At the Broadmoor Academy, Jane studied under Boardman Robinson, Frank Mechau, Henry Varnum Poor, and Ernest Fiene. During this period, she met fellow student Manuel Bromberg, who later became her husband.
The following year, the couple relocated to Woodstock, New York, where Jane continued creating art while raising their two daughters. After Manuel’s service in World War II, the family moved to North Carolina, where both obtained teaching positions. Jane joined the faculty of North Carolina State College of Design, serving as an Instructor of Drawing.
During the 1950s, while living in the South, Jane shifted her focus from art to activism, spending much of her time supporting the civil rights movement. After the family’s return to Woodstock, she remained active in local political causes.
Jane did not resume making art until 1975, when she traveled alone to France where she spent a year painting, drawing, and creating films. Upon returning to Woodstock, she became a founding sponsor of the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill in Hyde Park, New York.
