Artist Biography - Lyman Byxbe (1886-1980)
Lyman Byxbe was born in 1886 near Pittsfield, Illinois. Byxbe, who was largely self-taught, established himself as a commercial artist in Omaha Nebraska. He studied etching under Mark Levings. In addition to sharing his knowledge about the etching process, Levings extolled the beauty of Colorado, specifically the mountains surrounding Estes Park. In 1922, Byxbe and his wife made the first of many trips to Colorado. They spent most of the summers there during the 1920s where Byxbe created etchings of the Rocky Mountains. In 1934, the Byxbe’s left Omaha and settled permanently in Estes Park, Colorado where Byxbe established a print gallery. Over the following decades, Byxbe created numerous etchings of the Mountains around Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Byxbe remained in Estes Park until his death in 1980.
