Pipe and Stem, circa 1875

Antique Great Plains pipe and stem, circa 1875, composed of a handcarved wooden stem fitted with a catlinite pipe bowl. The long, slender stem is embellished near the upper end with tightly wrapped quillwork in yellow and red tones, accented with red horsehair.

The catlinite bowl is carved in an angular elbow form with a tall, slightly flaring bowl and a projecting stem socket. The restrained form emphasizes the natural color and polish of the stone, while the decorated wooden stem provides a strong contrast of material and color.

Pipes of this type held important social, diplomatic, and ceremonial roles among many Great Plains peoples. The combination of carved catlinite, a long wooden stem, and quill-wrapped decoration reflects the craftsmanship and visual traditions associated with Plains pipe making during the late 19th century.
