Richard H. Tallant was born in Ohio in 1853. As a young man he lived in Colorado mining camps. He showed talent from a young age and was primarily self-taught. He was a member of the Denver Art Club from 1886-1887. Shortly thereafter he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. However he made Devil's Gulch, Colorado his permanent residence. Tallant served as a Justice of Peace in Estes Park.

His subject matter took him across the West, to places such as Mount Hood, the Tetons, the Grand Canyon, the Rockies, and Pueblo. His paintings have been used in illustrations in many magazines and calendars.
