Sioux Parfleche Box with Red Trade Cloth, circa 1880-1890
Sioux Parfleche Box with Red Trade Cloth, circa 1880-1890
Antique Sioux parfleche box, circa 1880s-1890s, constructed from rawhide in the Great Plains region and trimmed with red trade cloth edging. The rectangular form is hand-painted with natural pigments across the lid and sides with a vibrant geometric design in red, yellow, blue, and green.
Bold diamonds, triangles, stepped forms, and opposing geometric elements are arranged in repeating bands. Hide ties secure the lid, while the red cloth edging adds a strong contrasting accent.
Parfleche containers were traditionally made from rawhide and used by Plains peoples for storing and transporting clothing, food, and personal belongings. This example is especially appealing for its intact box form, bright polychrome decoration, and strong overall visual presence.
